‘The Concept of Self: Individuality & Integrity’ – Exhibition

Following the first “The Concept of Self: on power, identity, and labels” exhibition in Bangkok, this January Arcolabs, Indonesia and S.A.C. Subhashok The Arts Centre, Bangkok return with “The Concept of Self: individuality and integrity” exhibited at Komunitas Salihara. Emphasizing its conceptual essence from the first series, the current Jakarta exhibition further looks into the influence of Indonesian and Thai political and cultural shift in the 1990s and afterwards, particularly, how it has affected each artist in developing their individual artistic self and artistic integrity as a member of society. Curated by Jeong-ok Jeon, Linjie Zhou, and Jongsuwat Angsuvarnsiri
“TheConcept of Self: individuality and integrity” features 8 young and progressive artists of Indonesia & Thailand who will demonstrate how they enhance their creative vision and artistic value as a response to the society:

The exhibition will open on 19 January and run through 3 February. It is open to public and there will be an Artists Talk on 20 January as well as a Master Class on 26 January at Galeri Salihara, Jakarta, Indonesia as follows:

In today’s world where meanings of culture, tradition, and identity become obscure, how does one define the ‘self’? How do artists cultivate their artistic integrity amidst political and cultural shift happening in their surroundings? How do artists develop their individual artistic self as a member of society?
In a session moderated by Leonhard Bartolomeus, we will delve deeper into the artists works and how the societal changes they’ve encountered in their lives affect their creative vision and artistic value.

MASTER CLASS | 26 Jan 2019

So many ways to create art, so little time to master them all. What makes an artist choose a medium over the other? How can a particular medium convey distinct messages and allow different experiences? In a four-in-one master class session, four Indonesian artists will share their creative practice and technical expertise they apply in their works. It is a reflection on the importance of process and the conception of individual integrity.
